Origin of the Word “Matka”

The word “Matka” means earthen pot.

In the early days, numbers were written on small slips of paper and placed inside a pot (matka). One slip was drawn, and that number became the result. That’s how the name “Matka” was born.

Where Satta Matka Actually Started

Satta Matka began when people used to bet on:

  • Cotton rate numbers from the New York Cotton Exchange
  • These numbers were teleprinted to Bombay (now Mumbai)

When this stopped, two men created a new local system:

  • Kalyanji Bhagat
  • Ratan Khatri (The famous Matka King)

They introduced draw timings, number charts, and a new style of the game.

This became known as Mumbai Matka.

Popular Matka Markets (Old Era)

Some of the most famous original markets were:

  • Kalyan Matka
  • Worli Matka
  • Main Mumbai
  • Milan Day/Night
  • Rajdhani Day/Night
  • Time Bazar

These were the real, old, structured markets with fixed timings and well-known operators.

How Satta Matka Spread Across India

By the 1970s–80s, Matka became very popular in:

  • Mumbai
  • Gujarat
  • Delhi
  • Rajasthan
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Haryana

Slowly, local versions formed in North India such as:

  • Gali
  • Disawar
  • Faridabad
  • Ghaziabad

These were inspired by Matka, but not part of the original Mumbai system.

How Today’s Online “Satta Matka” Is Different

Today’s “Satta Matka” seen on websites is not the same as the old Matka. There is:

  • No real operator
  • No fixed, official market
  • Different results on different websites
  • Random numbers posted online

In short, modern Satta Matka is mostly digital imitation.

Is Satta Matka Legal?

No. In India, Satta Matka is illegal, just like other forms of betting or number games. Only state-run lotteries are allowed.

Why People Still Search for Matka Results Today

Even though the real Matka system ended long ago, people still search for it because:

  • It is famous in pop culture
  • Many people grew up hearing the names
  • The internet continues to use old market names
  • Some follow it out of habit or curiosity

The names survived, even though the real system did not.

In Simple Words…

Satta Matka = A historical Indian number-based betting system that started in the 1960s, became extremely popular, went underground, and today survives only as unofficial online versions.
